Gold to Viby !
What a nerve-racking final drama we witnessed today.
Both teams fielded the same line-ups as in the first meeting, where Viby delivered an exceptionally strong performance with a convincing 6–1 victory.
Viby’s selected women therefore consisted of the two Pernilles (Søndergaard/Agerholm) along with Sally Maribo, while Hillerød lined up with Nicoline Koefoed, Annie Hedlund and Pia Toelhøj. (Chen Yan was sidelined due to illness – not Covid-19 related).
However, this was certainly not a Hillerød team affected by the previous result – what mental strength they showed.
As in the first match, the doubles was lost, but Viby came back strongly and led 2–1 after the first three matches. Sally then lost to Annie, and a true championship drama was underway.
In a highly exciting five-setter against Nicoline, Sally showed nerves of steel, winning 12–10 in the fifth set. Viby were once again ahead at 4–2 (Søndergaard had earlier confidently put Viby in front 3–2).
But then Hillerød struck back and moved ahead 5–4 – including two tight five-set matches where both Agerholm and Sally were defeated.
Fortunately, Hillerød would get no closer to victory. Pernille A. won very intense sets against Nicoline, and the Golden Set became a reality.
Here, Sally took the initiative. Despite her earlier loss to Pia Toelhøj, she won the Golden Set, which swung back and forth. She opened brilliantly with a 4–0 lead that was eventually caught up. Strong time-outs followed on both sides, but in the end “Golden Sally” secured Viby's triumph.
What a nerve-racking match! A huge tribute to the entire team: Sally Maribo, Pernille Søndergaard, Pernille Agerholm, Vivi Tu and Ann-Christine Rosager.
– and not least the entire coaching staff, our outstanding coach and chairman Simon Fisher, as well as Dan Refstrup, who throughout the tournament provided sublime coaching and support all the way..
Once again, huge congratulations to the toughest women from Viby!
